Sweet, tangy, refreshing summer cocktail–the perfect thing for entertaining on a hot night or sunny afternoon. I first posted about this drink back in October, but with these long, lazy summer days, lately, I’ve found myself drawn back to the classic Salty Dog.
Even though technically grapefruit season is October through June, and it’s July, the farmer’s market is still selling grapefruits, and as long as they’re selling, I’m buying! If you can’t find fresh, seasonal grapefruits to make your own juice, make sure to find juice without preservatives. Tri-County Produce has a great fresh-squeezed juice selection, but if you’re not in the Santa Barbara area, check your local Whole Foods. Basically, this drink has three ingredients, so you want to make sure to use the best possible. If you can’t find grapefruits or freshly squeezed juice, just save it for another time. It will be worth it to wait.
When I hosted a dinner party on Saturday, I squeezed the grapefruits and salted the rims of my glasses ahead of time. I know it doesn’t seem like a lot, but doing little things like this can end up saving more time than you might think.
Prep your glasses by salting the rims.
Fill your glass with ice.
Add 1 ounce of vodka or gin for two shots of grapefruit juice (you can play with these ratios, but this is a good rule of thumb).
Mix it up, sit back, relax, and enjoy!
