I set out to create an original Halloween cocktail that tasted fresh and a little spicy. A round of concocting was a bust and left me a little too buzzed for a Monday afternoon. Which all led me back to the classic Sidecar, a cocktail as reliable as those college girls wearing slutty police and pirate costumes (okay, I confess, but only one time!).
Now, this is not the sticky Sidecar of my Corona del Mar nights hanging at The Quiet Woman. This rendition chooses bourbon over brandy, has a nice brightness from the lemon juice and the combo of the simple syrup and bitters brings just the right balance of sweet and spice.
One of these before for heading out to trick or treating madness will warm you up, more than one and you won’t need a costume to scare the kids away. Cheers!
Makes 1 cocktail
2 ounces bourbon
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1 or 2 shakes Old Fashion Bitters
For the garnish:
Sliced lemon
Raw sugar (coarse granulated)
Pour the bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup and bitters in a small pitcher filled with ice and stir. Rim the glass with sugar and pour the cocktail mix. Garnish with a sliced lemon and serve.
